In Glenarm Village

Glenarm Castle & Walled Garden: The jewel of the area. Glenarm Castle was built by the 1st Earl of Antrim in 1636, and the current 15th Earl still lives here with his family. In November 2023, its Walled Garden won the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award, the first time a Northern Irish Garden won this UK award. You can explore the garden and woodland walk, take a guided castle tour, and visit the heritage centre. Don't miss the annual tulip festival in May.

Coach House Museum: On the castle estate, this houses a display of vintage and rare vehicles from Glenarm's collection, a treat for car enthusiasts, with brightly coloured old motors that make for great photographs.

The Barbican Gate: A striking historic gateway on Castle Street, and one of the castle's barbicans. It's a great spot for a picture, with a beautiful view over the river.

Glenarm Forest: At the top of Altmore Street, head through the stone archway to reach the forest. It's a lovely walk through woodland and down past the Glenarm River, and the circular trail takes about an hour. Breathe in the aroma of wild garlic in spring or go red squirrel spotting. The forest is also a beautiful area for dog walking.

Glenarm Marina: One of the oldest harbours in Europe, small but with a lovely, peaceful ambience. It offers 40 fully serviced pontoon berths within the village's historic limestone harbour. A relaxing spot to watch boats come in.

Glenarm Beach: It's very peaceful and a great spot to sit and watch out across the ocean. Unlike many beach areas, dogs are allowed to run on the beach and in the sea as long as owners are responsible and take home any mess they make.

The Village Itself: Walk up through Toberwine Street and Altmore Street, full of beautiful old buildings and brightly coloured terraced houses. Look out for the charming mermaid sculptures on the road into the village.

A Short Drive Away

Carnlough: A neighbouring coastal village. Its sheltered historic harbour with small fishing boats is a well-known Game of Thrones filming location, recognisable as the Free City of Braavos canal. Carnlough is also home to the Harbourview Hotel, Ireland’s only whisky hotel.

Madman's Window: A coastal landmark just outside Glenarm with great views of the Irish Sea and the surrounding landscape.

The Glens of Antrim & Causeway Coastal Route: Glenarm is one gateway to the nine glens on the northeast coast, where forest-covered hills swoop down into deep valleys, part of the Antrim Coast and Glens Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Glenariff Forest Park is a notable highlight further along. If you’re lucky, you might see the dolphins that often swim along the coastline.

These areas are famous for their natural beauty, so we ask guests to leave no trace, stick to designated paths, and check the countryside code. Many of the fields belong to local farms, so please ensure you do not trespass on private land.
